Merry Xmas: An Illustrated History

I love the history.

so long as it's words

It’s Christmas!! I’m sitting here in my Fairisle knit jumper with reindeer and snowflakes on, I’m listening to Idina Menzel forcefully emote glorious Christmas music at me, and I still haven’t bought all my presents or finished putting the decorations up. The festive season is definitely upon us.

All of that is slightly beside the point for the purposes of this blog post, but damnit, I just really love Xmas.

Oh wait, sorry – not Xmas, Christmas.

This is a common complaint at this time of year and gets people really riled up. A quick poll of my small corner of Twitter (disclaimer: I did this last year and was so slow to write the post that I saved it for this year) shows that pretty much everyone prefers to write Christmas over Xmas. For some, it’s a matter of principle, that they don’t like shortening or abbreviating words, or because Christmas

The Generational Gap in The Graduate

Aron's Movies

Unknown-15

The 1960’s were a time of change. Social movements were ample, conformity was thrown into question and young people began to venture into a future that expressed their individuality as opposed to what their elders preferred them to do. In The Graduate, we see times change, but we aren’t exposed to rioting against corrupt political turmoil or tuned in to a decade of getting stoned while listening to Jimi Hendrix that most people think about when you mention the 60s. The Graduate rather uses sex to show the generational gap in America that defined the transition into a time of ending censorship and freeing the youth in an emotional sense.

Christmas Deer

Most people do not know the story of the Christmas Deer.  Every year a special day comes to spread cheer to the World.  When he or she runs, the magic of goodness flows from the deer’s body and lands on good folk to help them be happy and return help others become happy.  The only problem is….when the deer dies the goodness vanishes.  Being a Christmas Deer, life can go on for a very long time as long as a hunter doesn’t shoot him or a car uses him as a hood ornament or any other event that might kill him.  I want to post the first few verse of the Christmas Deer song.  Sing the verse in the tune of O Holy Night.

O glorious world
I am the Xmas Deer
Please don’t hit me
while I’m running down the road
long live the deer
who doesn’t want to be on your hood
but running free to spread Xmas cheer
so don’t hit me
I’m a cute Xmas deer.
Long live the deer
to spread the glorious cheer

I think you understand the song.  Have an awesome sauce Holiday Season.

Fear Anger Hate

One of the greatest philosophers to inhabit any universe, Yoda, had some very wise words, “Fear Leads to Anger. Anger Leads to Hate. Hate Leads to Suffering.”  1 John 4:18 echoes Yoda’s words, “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.”  It only takes one person with fear and hate to convince others of the same fear causing misery for all.  So, if you listen to people who are always negative, spreading gloom and doom, not being positive at all, they are using fear as a weapon to achieve their goals.  You can’t end war with war but the universe reacts to love and love can end all wars.

Charlie Brown Christmas and Church

Charlie Brown Christmas special and church have something in common…how mean people are to each other.  Chuck is constantly picked on and to help him out he is appointed the director the the Christmas play, where he is still picked on.  Sent out to retrieve a tree, Chuck and Linus search for the most glorious tree.  Our bald headed friend picks the loser tree, the one that needs love.  Of course, Charlie is made fun of for picking this tree.  Linus gives the troops an inspirational speech and the group goes and loves the tree and Chuck.  Brings a tear to the eye, however, the next day the same people are as mean as ever…

Church is the same way.  People are mean and nasty to each other all week but then Sunday comes around and they sing and pray and shake people’s hands and listen to the inspirational message from the Head Dude.  Monday comes around and the same people are bitching about how long it takes to get their food or why the library book isn’t on the shelf (the computer said it would be there)  just general hatefulness to each other.  The message of treating people with love and respect doesn’t last very long if you don’t actually.  believe people should be treated in a respectful manner.
