Street Cat Named Bob

A Street Cat Named Bob: And How He Saved My Life, is a story of two misfits.  First, is James, a street musician who has so many issues, it’s amazing he is still alive.  Next is Bob, a rugged street cat, who needs a couch to sleep on at night to stay warm.  James loves cats but can barely take care of himself, there is no room in his life for a feline.  Bob, has chosen James as his caretaker.  When a cat choose you, you must heed the call.  James scrapes together what money he can and takes Bob to the veterinarian.

When Bob is healed from his afflictions, James decides it is too expensive to keep Bob.  He tries all sorts of ways to encourage Bob to move on, but James is the chosen one and Bob will not leave.

Every day, James heads out to take the trolley to the best place for a street musician to work.  One day on his ride, his furry feline hopped on him.  This won’t do, James had to take Bob along to his gig.  Being a very crowded part of the city Bob rode the shoulder of James, like the king of the jungle.  People loved Bob and wanted to pet him and take pictures of him.  James has never made much money as a street musician, but people are throwing in more money than ever into his guitar case.  Why?  Bob.  People love Bob.  The music was pretty good, too.

This is not another cute animal story.  I didn’t even talk about the important stuff.  The story is really about James and his relationship to his father, family, himself.  James is self-destructive and if Bob would have not have come around and chose him, James might be dead.  Animals have a way of healing people.  Being a big fan of James Heriot, this book ranks high on high on the animals scale just like Heriot’s books.  How can you not like a cat whose name is the same forwards and backwards?
